Uninsured Action

Uninsured ActionPolice have seized the UK's millionth uninsured vehicle on the day that a report by the Motor Insurer's Bureau showed that Birmingham contains the highest density of uninsured drivers in Britain.

There are 34 million drivers in the UK, and it is believed that 1.2 million of those are uninsured. Since 2005, when new powers were given to police, allowing them to stop uninsured vehicles, an average of 500 cars have been taken off the roads every day.

However, some people, like Simon Douglas of AA Insurance believe that penalties are not strict enough. He points out that uninsured drivers kill 160 people and injure 23,000 per year, while adding £33 to car insurance policies nationwide.

"We are still a long way from cleaning up Britain's roads. In uninsured driver hotspots such as parts of Birmingham, innocent motorists are eight times more likely than average to be hit by an uninsured vehicle," he said.
