The weather outside is frightful...

The weather outside is frightful...All kinds of statistics are doing the rounds - 'the coldest November since 1985', then it was 1970... quite simply, it is absolutely freezing across all of Northern Europe right now and, as ever, motorists have been warned about making any unnecessary journeys.

Tales of motorists trapped for hours in arctic conditions are enough to chill the bones of any sane person, but even if you only have to drive a couple of miles, there are some steps it would be wise to take:

  • Make sure you clear snow from your roof - any snow sliding from the top of your car and onto the road or the pavement can be hazardous to you and those around you - sudden snowfalls - however minor - can cause chaos, and your visibility may suffer too.
  • Don't nip inside while you warm up your car - thieves have cottoned onto people leaving their cars unattended why they let things heat up - and many insurance companies won't be sending much sympathy your way if your keys were left in the ignition before you ended up running down the road in your slippers.
  • Take blankets, a first aid kid, water, food and basic tools and replacement parts along with you for any journey - some people have been forced to stay overnight in freezing conditions and this can be lethal.

With reports of petrol shortages coming in and the news that within several days it should be somewhat milder than it is right now, it might just be worth tucking into bed and avoiding work for the next few days or so! But mum's the word...
