Ready, Set... Charge!

Ready, Set... Charge!A Hong Kong consortium has taken on the commercial rights to a new "Formula E" racing series. As the name suggests, the grid will feature the latest in electronic car technology, rather than the usual suspects.

The plan, which will cost 50 million Euros to launch for 2014, proposes to have 10 teams racing their cars through the city centres of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Miami, Los Angeles and Moscow as well as a host of others, with the team roster set to expand to 14 in 20145.

The races will take an hour to see through but due to the technology, there will be two charging pit stops per race.

"The new events will provide a great way to engage the younger generation. This spectacular series will offer both entertainment and a new opportunity to share FIA values with a wide audience as clean energy, mobility and sustainability," said FIA President Jean Todt.

He went on to say that "We don't expect the big car makers to step into Formula E in the beginning. The industry is not too familiar with electric racing. But I am sure they will come in in a second stage."
