Old Money

01/07/2011

Old MoneyIt was in 1950 that Jack Perkins spotted a 1924 Bugatti racing car, which he promptly bought for the grand total of £60 – around £1300 today.

Restoring it to its former glory – as ‘the most beautiful racing car of all time’, according to Autocar magazine – he raced it until 1988, at the age of 78. He died 4 years later.

Fast-forward to today, at the Bonham’s annual action at Goodwood, and it’s just been sold for 430,000 to an unidentified buyer after being on display at the Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset.

So, if you want to cash in in 60 years’ time, you’d better start scouring for something a little beat beaten-up, half-forgotten but mostly, a little bit special. And put a lot of work into restoring it.
