Loose Change

02/05/2012

Loose ChangeHome Office figures have shown that British drivers are parting ways with £18 million per year – completely unnecessarily – in the form of fees incurred through unpaid speeding tickets and other fixed-penalty notices.

Of 1.84 million tickets issued in 2010, 32% were paid late – meaning that after the 28 day limit the fine increased by 50%.

Although individual police forces can relax the limit if they are feeling generous, it appears that many don't, and once the time limit has passed the case becomes a court matter and out of their hands.

It is worth noting that speeding fines continued their yearly decline for the fifth time running, with 986,000 issued – less than half of 2005's high of 1.98 million.
