High Roller

High RollerA frantic bidding way between two car enthusiasts at the Goodwood Festival of Speed has seen a Rolls Royce Silver Ghost enter the record books and become the most expensive Rolls Royce ever sold at an auction.

It had been expected to sell for £2,000,000, but reached over double that (£4,705,000) due to a fierce rivalry that saw the auction turn into a spectator-pleasing event of high drama.

The Silver Ghost, so called because of the Corgi toy that was based on it, may be the only of its kind to retain its original interior of silk, silver, ivory and luxury fabric, as most of its vehicular brethren were converted into ambulances during the First World War.

The identities of the bidders has not been revealed, but it may concern some that it will be leaving these shores again, as it did in 1992 until 2009, when its Texan lawyer owner was killed in a car crash
